My first research project was about the life styles and
cultures of Native Americans. I was elementary school in the 4th
grade, and we had to learn about Native Americans and how they used to live.
When I was little and I didn’t know exactly how to do research and I still yet
wasn’t very accustomed to using the Internet. My mom showed me some information
and took some of the notes form the lessons we learned in class. It was not
hard but it did require some reading of books and looking up some pictures
online. The teacher didn’t really give us a simple procedure to follow but she
did give us a certain topic to do that was part of Native American subject and
from there we did our own separate topic.
I do not remember the topic that I worked on but I know that
I was with a group of other kids that did the same topic as we do and it was
job to do different aspects of that topic. So lets say that our topic was
marriage and each of us had to learn different things about the topic of
marriage in a Native American tribe; we put all our information together and
present it to the class on what we learned and what we found interesting about the
topic. I remember it being a project were we had to research things about
Native American culture. We had to draw pictures and diagrams to show exactly
how things looked like in their society.
I enjoyed learning about Native Americans and the topics a
lot. It was not something that ever think that I would look back on. Now I
think about and I realized that I have been doing research projects for most of
my life. It has been instilled in us from an early age I think to teach us how
to retain knowledge and how to use it and put it together. I think that it is a
very important that we learn at an early age to know how to do research
projects. It helps us understand and gather information independently and grow
as independent learners.
That's exactly it Olivia! Doing research is an independent activity that does help you learn independently! And I think it is such an exciting way to learn and so much better than a teacher handing you the information! Instead you learn it on your own.
